Court hands down heavy fine for smuggled cigarettes

A 24-year-old man has been fined BND23,810 by the Magistrate’s Court for possessing smuggled cigarettes. Khalid bin Ibrahim, who was sentenced on Wednesday, faces a 13-month prison term if he fails to pay the fine.

Magistrate Syarifah Nur Baqiyah binti Malai Shahran presided over the case, where the Customs prosecutor detailed that the defendant was apprehended by Customs preventive officers during a raid at a residence in Jalan Ban 5, Kampong Kilanas, on March 13, 2023, at 10.27am.

During the raid, officers seized a total of 22 cartons, 56 packets, and 34 sticks of various brands of cigarettes, alongside BND158 in cash.

Khalid pleaded guilty to the charge and accepted the facts presented by the prosecution in court.

Following his plea, the court ordered the confiscation and destruction of the seized cigarettes. The BND158 in cash was forfeited, while a tablet that had been taken during the raid was ordered to be returned to the defendant.
