Cortisol face

AFP – It’s being called ‘cortisol face’ or even ‘moon face’. For those unfamiliar with the expression, it’s a term popularised on TikTok to refer to a puffy face, allegedly caused by high cortisol levels.

Cortisol is the body’s main stress hormone, regulated by the adrenal glands. It plays a crucial role in metabolism, the reduction of inflammation and the proper functioning of the immune system.

An increase in cortisol can have various consequences on health: high blood pressure, diabetes, weight gain, obesity, osteoporosis, amenorrhea, skin rashes and sleep disorders.

But what seems to be worrying social media users specifically at the moment is the idea that this hormone could cause facial swelling.

To slim down their faces, TikTok users are turning to various methods, such as lymphatic facial massage.

This technique, which uses light, rhythmic movements combined with gentle pressure, is said to reduce puffiness or bags under the eyes and cheeks. Another popular method is ‘mewing’, which involves using a flat stone called a gua sha to massage the face.

Followers of these practices claim to see noticeable changes within a few weeks.

There are no scientific studies guaranteeing the efficacy of these practices in reducing such swelling. However, there are some natural solutions that can help prevent or minimise the problem of excess cortisol.

For example, sleeping eight hours a night, choosing herbal tea rather than caffeine-filled beverages, taking a walk or listening to music have all been proven to significantly reduce stress.

This trend is part of a broader obsession with sculpted faces, a phenomenon that has been observed for over a year now.

The popularity of aesthetic procedures such as buccal fat removal (removal of fat from the cheeks) and chin lipo (slimming of the lower face) are proof of this.

While some celebrities and influencers are in search of a perfect athletic face, skepticism remains as to the reality of the ‘cortisol face’.

Does the ‘cortisol face’ really exist? Is it really possible to have a swollen face due to stress?

THE MASTER HORMONE

Although this label has become popular, experts agree that while stress can indeed cause facial changes, this supposed swelling needs to be put into perspective.

“Chronic high levels of cortisol can lead to facial swelling, but such pronounced effects are not commonly seen outside of significant medical conditions,” functional medicine doctor Vijay Murthy explained in an interview with Healthline.

“In most cases, everyday stress does not elevate cortisol to the levels needed to produce such a dramatic physical change.”

Physician and hormone management specialist Dr Todd Dorfman agreed.

In a Byrdie article, he stated, “Excessive cortisol can stimulate increased sebum production, exacerbate inflammation, and accelerate collagen degradation, leading to dermatological issues such as acne, erythema and skin laxity. Conversely, insufficient cortisol levels can lead to xerosis and a lackluster complexion.”

He added that cortisol, known as the master hormone, can profoundly influence more than just your skin. Its effects extend to sleep patterns, energy levels, anxiety, cognitive function and so much more.

OTHER FACTORS?

However, there are many other factors that can explain a rounder face. Allergies, inflammation or a poor diet can all contribute.
