In today’s constant progress in the fields of sports science and sports medicine, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) through its medical and scientific committees, promotes the exchange of knowledge on advancements in the discipline to ensure top performance levels of athletes are achieved, Permanent Secretary (Sports) at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) Pengiran Mohd Amirrizal bin Pengiran Haji Mahmud as an Advisor to the Working Committee of the Sports Science and Medicine Conference 2024 said.
He said this at the launch of the two-day Sports Science and Medicine Conference Brunei Darussalam 2024 at The Rizqun International Hotel yesterday.
“The MCYS supports a similar objective in achieving excellence in sports and competition at all levels, while prioritising the health and safety of our national athletes,” he said.
“Cooperation among stakeholders is important in ensuring scientific results presented in the conference are translatable into impactful actions,” he added.
“To have representatives of various ministries and private entities present today makes this conference a beneficial learning platform to achieve stated goals.”
The conference’s main aim is to strengthen the understanding of sports science by sharing the latest findings in this field, promoting collaboration among sports science experts, as well as developing strategies to improve the performance and health of athletes.
The permanent secretary said, “The conference provides an opportunity for Bruneians in the fields of sports medicine, sports science, physiotherapy and sports training to improve their knowledge with the latest discoveries and connect with the Asian sports medicine community.
“In addition, it is a good opportunity for stakeholders of the Ministry of Education to broaden their horizons in providing further learning opportunities for sports science and sports medicine in the country.”
Nine members of the Asian Federation of Sports Medicine (AFSM) and two panellists from the Sultanate were invited as guest speakers to share their knowledge.
The programme started with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah followed by the introduction of the Sports Science and Medicine Conference by Working Committee and Head of the Sports Medicine and Research Centre Dr Essam Shaaban.
AFSM Vice President Dr Ucksy Mallick delivered a presentation titled ‘Understanding and Managing Overtraining Syndrome’, while Secretary General of the Thai Sports Medicine Association Dr Ead Lorprayoon presented ‘Recovery and Sports Supplementation for High Performance Athletes’.
Pengiran Mohd Amirrizal also presented certificates to Dr Ucksy Mallick and Dr Ead Lorprayoon, before touring the exhibition.
Director of Youth and Sports Umi Kalthum binti Haji Abdul Karim and Acting Director of Youth Development Centre Haswandi bin Haji Osman were also present. – Azlan Othman
