Conference highlights Arabic language development in Southeast Asia

Universiti Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) through the Faculty of Arabic Language participated in the 5th Southeast Asian Arabic Language Conference (MUBAASAT) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

The conference, officiated by Secretary of State, Higher Representative to Chay Boren, Minister of Religion, Dr Seng Sokmony, was jointly organised by UNISSA, the Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB), and the Cambodia University of Management and Technology, Cambodia themed ‘Standards for Teaching Arabic in Southeast Asia: Between Hope and Aspiration’.

Representing UNISSA as one of the keynote speakers was Dean of the Faculty of Arabic Language Dr Hajah Rafidah binti Haji Abdullah and four academic staff from the same faculty, who presented papers at the conference. Fourteen speakers from various countries shared their research at the conference in issues related to the Arabic language.

The delegation will attend the Coordination Meeting for the 6th MUBAASAT, scheduled to take place in 2025.

The conference focused on the importance of developing quality standards for teaching Arabic, including aspects such as curriculum, teacher skills, assessment, teaching methods, and more, so that these can be applied in member institutions and provide benefits to all involved in the field of Arabic language education.

The conference also discussed the development of the Arabic language, particularly in Southeast Asia, which serves as evidence of the public’s acceptance of Arabic, the language of Al-Quran and Islamic sources. – Rokiah Mahmud
