The 9th World Junior Wushu Championships may strengthen bonds across borders, promote environmental consciousness and inspire a generation of young warriors to protect the world, just as they protect their spirit in competition, Co-Chair of the 9th World Junior Wushu Championships Dr Muhammad Firdaus bin Abdul Rahman said during its opening ceremony yesterday.
He added, “This is a historic moment for Brunei Darussalam, as our nation stands proud and confident in welcoming friends from all corners of the globe.”
Meanwhile, Vice President of the International Wushu Federation (IWUF), Anthony Goh said, “This event is a celebration of youth and wushu. For many competitors, it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, particularly for those competing for the first time.”
Goh added, “The wushu family is thrilled that the sport has been included for the first time in the Youth Olympic Games – the world’s most prestigious youth sports event. Let’s watch closely for the standout talents competing in Brunei, as they may be tomorrow’s Olympic champions.”
The opening ceremony also included a traditional Brunei dance by Sayyidina Abu Bakar Secondary School students, a wushu performance by Brunei’s national athletes, a traditional Chinese dance by Chung Hwa Middle School students and the theme song Young Wushu Warriors performed by PGS RMF Music Academy. Organised by IWUF, the World Junior Wushu Championships are held every two years and represent the highest level of competition among youth athletes.
Brunei’s wushu athlete Lim Wan Xin led the recitation of the Athlete’s Pledge, while the Jury Pledge was read by Brazil’s Marcus Alves.
