SINGAPORE (ANN/THE STRAITS TIMES) – A Chinese IT technician and his wife, who stripped and revealed themselves at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), were convicted of public indecency and fined MYR5,000 (SGD1,500) each by a court in Sepang, Selangor, on February 17, according to reports from Malaysian media.
Xu Jianfeng, 27, and his spouse Shi Qian, 28, admitted to the crime on February 14. Malaysian lawyer Chew Sin Yee represented them, and their charges were read to them in Mandarin at the sessions court.
Xu undressed and revealed his underwear close to a boarding entrance at KLIA2 at 11.33am on February 9.
Shi, a teacher, undressed and exposed herself at another boarding gate in the same airport at 11.55am on the same day.
The pair revealed to Malaysian media that they had plunged into emotional chaos after hypnotising themselves in a strange psychological experiment, with Xu declaring himself the “king of the universe” and Shi an “AI (artificial intelligence) robot”.
Following their arrest at KLIA2 on February 9, they were transported to a hospital for treatment.
After they were discharged, Xu and Shi expressed their apologies through local media for their actions and for delaying the flight they were meant to board.
A video clip circulating on the internet depicts the couple being removed from a flight traveling from Kuala Lumpur to Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport in Guangdong, China, following their disruptive behaviour on the aircraft.
In the video, Shi seems to be speaking indistinctly.
Xu and Shi were said to be on vacation in Malaysia from February 5. When they failed to return to China on February 9 as anticipated, a family member posted on the Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu, also known as RedNote, to inquire about their whereabouts.
