Hariz Hasif bin Mohd Halfiq from Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (YSHHB) Primary School’s 4 Earth claimed the champion’s title in the school’s Year 4 Chess Competition yesterday, held as part of the school’s year-end activities.
Some 38 students demonstrated their strategic thinking and problem-solving skills in a spirited seven-round competition. Hajah Mariam praised the students’ efforts, saying, “We are incredibly proud of how our students rose to the challenge and embraced the spirit of the game. Keep this in your mind and heart – one day, you may represent the country in competitions around the world.”
The tournament, held in collaboration with the Brunei Chess Federation, followed a Rapid format, with each player allotted 10 minutes per game using a seven-round Swiss-system format. The setup tested both quick-thinking and tactical expertise, challenging participants to refine their strategies in each round.
The event was designed to nurture critical cognitive skills such as strategising and problem-solving, while instilling values of fair play and sportsmanship.
