Leadership in education key to students’ success, says permanent secretary

Leadership is important in education to shape an environment where students can excel both academically and holistically, said Permanent Secretary (Core Education) at the Ministry of Education (MoE) Dr Shamsiah Zuraini Kanchanawati binti Haji Tajuddin.

She said this in a keynote speech during the School Leaders Symposium 2024, themed ‘Quality Leaders, Quality Education’, at Indah Biru Hall yesterday.

The permanent secretary also highlighted the importance of empowering school leaders to take proactive steps to enhance student readiness for the challenges ahead.

The sub-theme, ‘Strengthening Students’ Future-Ready Skills’, is “fitting in our educational landscape today”, she added.

The event saw the launch of a guidebook Garispanduan Pelan Perkembangan dan Laluan Kerjaya Pendidik, designed to support career and professional growth for educators. The resource outlines three distinct career paths aimed at promoting lifelong learning and leadership, encouraging educators to explore career development opportunities within their tracks.

The symposium also introduced the Development of the Brunei Darussalam Students Assessment Framework, spearheaded by the Department of Examinations. The initiative aims to make assessment a tool for continuous learning, focusing on individual strengths and guiding students to become future-ready.

Another initiative presented was the Program Sahsiah Pelajar (PSP) by the Department of Co-Curriculum Education, aimed at revitalising co-curricular activities as a pathway to holistic education. These activities are designed to help students develop character, leadership, interpersonal skills and resilience – attributes essential for their growth as future leaders.

The symposium’s afternoon session featured the heads of Departments-School Leaders Dialogue, where system and school leaders exchanged insights on innovative strategies and ways to collectively elevate educational standards.

The symposium marked a significant step towards fulfilling the MoE’s vision to prioritise developing future-ready students through resilient and confident school leadership.

The event, which gathered 393 school leaders from both government and private institutions under the MoE and the Ministry of Religious Affairs, focused on fostering meaningful dialogue, innovative practices, and collaboration. – Fadley Faisal
