Checkers champion emerges in first-time competition

Fairulman bin Haji Bidin emerged victorious after competing against some of the best checkers players over three days during the Checkers Open Competition 2024.

Held at the Municipal Hall from September 6, more than 30 contestants from across the nation competed for a place in the finals on September 8.

Fairulman managed to be one step ahead during a close match against Aziz bin Jali during the finals.

Meanwhile, Haji Amir bin Haji Salim was placed third as he checked in a win during the runner-up match against Haji Ali bin Mat.

Chairman of the competition and village head of Kampong Pandan ‘A’ Abdul Aziz bin Haji Seri told the Bulletin that the competition was the first of its kind organised by the Kampong Pandan ‘A’ Village Consultative Council in conjunction with the 78th birthday celebration of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

“In addition to the top three players receiving a prize, a special award was also handed to the competition’s youngest player, 10-year-old Noor Shafie bin Noor Arrashid,” Abdul Aziz said.

He hopes that the competition provided players with a platform to showcase and hone their skills.

Legislative Council (LegCo) member and Mukim Bukit Sawat Penghulu Yang Berhormat Haji Mohd Salleh bin Haji Othman attended the finals and presented prizes to the winners and the youngest player. Also present were LegCo member and Village Head of Kampong Bukit Sawat Yang Berhormat Mohammad bin Abdullah @ Lim Swee Ann. – Daniel Lim
