Brunei Council on Social Welfare (MKM) President Yusof bin Halim advised children under MKM to work hard in school and instil a confident mindset so that they can change the fate of their families through their successes in school.
Yusof was addressing 100 children who joined MKM’s National Family Day celebration at the Games Village of Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex yesterday.
With a mission to provide assistance to underprivileged groups in the Sultanate, MKM organised the event in support of the whole-of-nation approach to highlight the importance of familial harmony in overcoming challenges and social issues.
“MKM is confident that in a family institution, strength can motivate its members to excel in studies and break the cycle of poverty. The confidence has been proven to help; we have seen families no longer needing assistance. There was also a family who broke the cycle of poverty and even provided assistance to another family in need,” said Yusof.
He also said that since 2009, MKM has carried out several programmes to help the government lift families out of poverty.
Meanwhile, Acting Permanent Secretary (Community) at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Dr Siti Norkhalbi binti Haji Wahsalfelah officiated the family day event.
MKM’s programmes include the School Breakfast Scheme, where over 300 underprivileged students are provided breakfast in school daily; the Staple Food Assistance programme providing basic food to 80 families monthly; and Back To School programme, School Fee Assistance programme, School Transportation Assistance programme and an adhoc programme to help students with special needs. – James Kon
