I am a man in my 50s, and I can still remember the good old days when we didn’t have to lock the front door at night and there was no fear of break-ins.
Now, it seems like every week, there are at least a few incidents of theft, assault and abuse in the country.
My take is that the advent of social media is the main culprit of social degradation.
The younger generation is spending more and more time on their smartphones and less and less time learning how to get along with one another, leading to the deterioration of our collective values.
When comes time to form a relationship, be it friendship or companionship, most are quite clueless as to how to approach – let alone sustain – it.
A part of me wonders if we should downright outlaw social media. But that would be impossible as it has seeped into our everyday lives, from keeping in touch with friends and family overseas to promoting a home business.
However, I believe there should be a fail-safe in place in case people become too engrossed in the platform and remove themselves from the society completely.
Perhaps the best place to start is home, where parents can encourage their children to move away from the screen and participate in the physical world, while educating them on the dangers of trading in their real lives for virtual ones.
