The Intermediate Court yesterday handed sentences to four men for stealing cables, causing disruption to services of a key provider and committing mischief.

Judge Harnita Zelda Skinner concluded that five years and four months’ jail with six caning sentence is appropriate for Mohd Munawarah bin Haji Abdul Kadir, 33, Muhammad Dzul Fauzie Musalim, 19, and Rudy Othman, 41.

Meanwhile, Husra Metussin @ Hussin, 56, received a sentence of nine years and four months’ jail.

A mandatory whipping sentence was substituted with an additional seven months’ jail for Husra as he is over 50 years old.

Prosecutor Aeny Zullizam revealed in court that the quartet had stolen 40.5 metres of copper cables during the wee hours of November 18, 2021 at Kampong Sungai Kebun.

Over the course of theft, they had caused damages worth thousands of dollars and service downtime for telecommunication customers.

The prosecution informed that the theft was discovered by security personnel alerted by alarm systems that went off.

The security personnel then filed police reports and with the aid of CCTV camera footages, led to the defendants’ arrests.

On December 27, 2021, Husra alone stole 16 metres of copper cables and optic-fibre cables from the roadside at Kampong Sungai Asam at 1am.

This also caused damages worth thousands of dollars and service downtime.

Husra was detained by security personnel who caught him red-handed inside the manhole.
