Bruneians head off for holiday break

Heavy traffic was seen at the nation’s land borders as families headed out of the country for end-of-year holidays.

Aisy, a mother of three, said she experienced a three-kilometre traffic jam at the Sungai Tujoh Immigration Control post at 8am yesterday.

She believed that while many people are thinking of paying down their debts or saving, others are crossing the border to look for a good bargain.

Meanwhile, Jamarshah, a father of three, said he frequently travels to Kota Kinabalu with his family to take a well-deserved break after long schooling session.

From January to October, over 186,000 visitors from Brunei Darussalam visited Sabah, according to the Sabah Tourism Board. This is an increase of 541 per cent compared to the same period last year (29,083 visitors).

The statistics have also recorded that Brunei travellers topped the number of visitors surpassing Korean travellers in second spot with 164,984 visitors.

From January to December 2022, there were 76,664 visitors from the Sultanate to Sabah popularly known as ‘Land Below the Wind’.

Meanwhile the Sarawak Tourism Board said that from January to August, nearly 850,000 visitors from the Sultanate visited Sarawak. – Azlan Othman
