The Ministry of Education of Brunei Darussalam has sent a delegation to Japan under the Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths (JENESYS) Programme, specifically the ASEAN-Japan Sports X SDGs initiative. Nine Year 9 and Year 10 students from Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College, Berakas Secondary School, and Pengiran Anak Puteri Hajah Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah Secondary School, Lumut, along with an accompanying teacher from Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College, embarked on this eight-day journey to Tokyo and Fukushima from October 28 to November 4.
Present at the Brunei International Airport to bid the delegation farewell were Acting Deputy Director and Head of Student Affairs, Department of Schools, Ministry of Education Pengiran Ali Shafie bin Pengiran Haji Abas; and Miura Keiko, Deputy Chief of Mission/Counsellor from the Japanese Embassy in Brunei Darussalam.
The JENESYS programme aims to foster cooperation between Japan and ASEAN nations in promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a United Nations initiative supported by member countries worldwide. Football has been chosen as the central theme of this programme, highlighting its potential to encourage social awareness and support for the SDGs. In addition to fostering sports engagement, the programme offers educational experiences and cultural exchange, further strengthening the close ties between Brunei Darussalam and Japan.
During the visit, the students and teacher will gain first-hand insights into Japan’s educational and football industry systems through collaborative sessions with peers from the other 11 ASEAN nations. The program’s 110 participants are also set to explore the independence and learning approaches vital to pursuing studies abroad. Additionally, they will observe efforts by J League football clubs and Japan’s National Football Team toward advancing the SDGs. The itinerary includes visits to cultural sites, sports facilities, and historical landmarks in Japan, providing an immersive experience in the country’s heritage and traditions.
The send-off at the Brunei International Airport was attended by officials from the Ministry of Education’s Department of Schools, representatives from the Japanese Embassy, and the students’ family members.
