Lights at the iconic Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Bridge and Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha Bridge turned blue last night in conjunction with World Diabetes Day 2024 celebrations.
Diabetes is the fourth leading cause of death in the Sultanate after cancer, heart disease, and cerebrovascular disease, according to the Ministry of Health.
Based on findings from the survey ‘National Non-Communicable Diseases 2015-2016’, the prevalence of diabetes among adults in Brunei Darussalam is 9.7 per cent.
Aware of the global health threat of diabetes, World Diabetes Day is celebrated globally every November 14 as a united global effort to raise awareness of diabetes and the challenges faced in addressing it.
World Diabetes Day is also a platform to gain collective commitment, including from individuals, health professionals, and policymakers, in better prevention, diagnosis and management of diabetes.
This year, the theme for World Diabetes Day celebration is ‘Diabetes and Well-being’, which emphasises the importance of holistic care that includes mental health, physical activity, nutrition and social support. – James Kon
