Bank underscores commitment to community well-being

Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) recently demonstrated its commitment to community health and well-being by supporting the commemoration of World Cancer Day 2025.

The event, held at Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien, was organised by The Brunei Cancer Centre (TBCC), Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC) and officially launched by Minister of Health and Chairman of the Board of Directors of JPMC Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar.

The event featured a ‘Walk, Run & Cycle’ event, encouraging participation from individuals and families across the Sultanate to demonstrate their solidarity in the fight against cancer.

BIBD’s participation as a sponsor reflects the bank’s strong commitment to serving Brunei Darussalam in various aspects, including initiatives that prioritise the health and wellness of its people. This aligns with BIBD’s foundational values of Maqasid Syariah, which emphasises the preservation of life and well-being.

“BIBD is honoured to support the World Cancer Day 2025 event and contribute to raising awareness about this critical health issue,” said BIBD Head of Government Relations and Special Projects Haji Muhammad Yusri bin Haji Wahsalfelah.

“We believe that a healthy community is a thriving community, and we are dedicated to supporting initiatives that promote the well-being of all Bruneians. This participation underscores our commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of those affected by cancer and supporting the vital work of organisations like TBCC and JPMC.”

BIBD’s support for World Cancer Day complements other ongoing initiatives, such as the BIBD ‘Corporate Platoon’, established in August 2022.

This group, which consists 30 certified members and certified first aiders from across the bank, acts as an auxiliary to the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society (BRC), providing humanitarian assistance, volunteering, and supporting health and wellness activities nationwide. Members of the ‘Corporate Platoon’ have completed intensive training recognised by the Safety, Health and Environment National Authority (SHENA), including Occupational First Aid Certification Training (OFAC) and a Wellness Training Programme certified by the Ministry of Health. The initiatives are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Ensuring Healthy Lives and Promoting Well-being For All At All Ages).

The BIBD Wellness Programme has previously benefited participants by providing them with the knowledge and tools to identify potential underlying health conditions.

World Cancer Day, observed annually on February 4, serves as a global platform to raise awareness about cancer and encourage action towards its prevention, detection, and treatment.

The ‘United by Unique’ campaign theme for 2025-2027 emphasises person-centred cancer care, recognising the individual journeys of those affected and the importance of community support.
