Bank launches environmental sustainability project

Cabinet ministers officiated Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam’s (BIBD) Projek Alam Mampan (Sustainable Nature Project) with a tree planting ceremony yesterday.

According to the bank, the project aims to address various aspects of environmental sustainability, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The first initiative under the project is ‘660 Roots to a Greener Future’, a tree planting that focuses on SDG 15: Life on Land.

Yesterday’s ceremony saw the planting of 40 trees at Taman Mahkota Jubli Emas to commemorate the country’s 40th National Day as well as the bank’s anniversary.

The ceremony was officiated by Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II Dato Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah, who is also the Chairman of BIBD; Minister of Home Affairs Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ahmaddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman and Minister of Development Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Muhammad Juanda bin Haji Abdul Rashid.

BIBD Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Junaidi bin Haji Masri was also in attendence, along with senior government officials and executives, BIBD board members, senior management and staff as well as members of the bank’s Shariah Advisory Body.

According to the bank, the 660 Roots initiative will see trees planted across the four districts of Brunei Darussalam, in collaboration with Green Brunei. Projek Alam Mampan will also expand to include initiatives supporting World Ocean Day and exploring various coral restoration projects to align with SDG 14: Life Below Water.

“Through these efforts, BIBD aims to contribute to the preservation and restoration of Brunei’s diverse ecosystems, from land to sea,” said the bank. – James Kon
