Bail granted to foreigner for not posing flight risk

A Vietnamese man was allowed bail after his counsel assured the High Court that his client does not pose a flight risk.

Bui Van Tam is committed to the Magistrate’s Court in a case involving charges of conspiracy and money laundering.

The magistrate refused a bail application after hearing reasons from Prosecutor Syafina binti Abdul Hadzid.

Bui’s lawyer, Pengiran Khairul Nizam bin Pengiran Haji Mohd Yassin of Messrs Yusof Halim and Partners applied against the Magistrate’s Court decision.

The High Court, presided by Judicial Commissioner Haji Abdullah Soefri bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin allowed Bui to be released on bail after hearing counsel Pengiran Khairul Nizam cite his client’s “full and steady employment” in the country. Judicial Commissioner Haji Abdullah Soefri, in his October 19 ruling, was satisfied that Bui will fulfil his commitment in attending trial and not abscond.

Bui is released on bail of BND10,000 with two local sureties and other strict conditions. – Fadley Faisal
