Active weather conditions expected until Monday, says BDMD

Weather conditions are forecast to be active until Monday. Occasional heavy and thundery showers are expected, affecting many coastal and sea areas in the morning and at night, as well as inland areas in the afternoon. Wind speeds of up to 50 kilometres per hour are expected in or near showers.

Over Brunei waters, the sea state is generally slight to moderate, between 0.5 to 1.5 metres.

According to the Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department (BDMD), the Sultanate is currently near the end of the first half of the northeast monsoon, where the country usually experiences unstable weather conditions, with occasional heavy showers or thundershowers, particularly during the night until early morning.

Following the thunderstorm event that happened on Wednesday night, which affected many areas of the country, the BDMD also issued a red weather warning, which means high risk and attention to take precautionary actions.

The department’s Meteorological Observation Station at Brunei International Airport recorded the highest total rainfall amount for a day, at 103.2 millimetres (mm). This rainfall amount has reached about 40 per cent of the average total amount of rainfall for January, from just one day’s event. National Automatic Weather Stations at three different locations – Anggerek Desa, Bandar Seri Begawan, and Benutan – recorded total rainfall amounts of 193mm, 142mm, and 113.2mm respectively.

Members of the public are advised to take precautionary actions with respect to the forecast of active weather conditions. There is a high risk of flash floods, especially at low-lying and flood-prone areas as well as near river banks during continuous heavy rain and also during high tide. The risk of landslides, fallen trees, and flying roofs is also possible during heavy showers and gusty conditions. Moderate sea conditions are dangerous for all small boat operations, sea recreational activities, and sports.
