Abandoned stalls demolished

The Ministry of Development, as part of its ongoing campaign to enhance road safety and improve the country’s image, demolished four abandoned stalls at Jalan Bukit Kebun and two at Jalan Utama Terunjing on Thursday. The operation also saw the demolition of one abandoned stall at Jalan Bengkurong Masin.

Personnel from the ministry’s Public Works Department and the Town and Country Planning Department conducted the demolitions in collaboration with the Brunei Muara District Office and the Royal Brunei Police Force.

These abandoned stalls pose safety risks to road users and negatively affect the country’s image. The demolition of these structures, which requires government expenditure, could have been redirected to more beneficial projects such as building or repairing roads.

The Director General of Public Works has the authority to remove such structures and may claim the expenses from the stall owners.

The ministry reminded the public that constructing any structures on roads or road reserves without permission is an offence under the Road Traffic Act, punishable by a fine of up to BND2,000.

Stall operators are urged to comply with the law and contribute to improving the environment and public well-being. The ministry encourages members of the public to report abandoned stalls that pose dangers to road users by calling Talnian Darussalam at 123. – LYNA MOHAMAD
