I feel sorry for my colleague, Hajah L, who, in her mid-50s, shared her recent hospital experience with me.
Being diabetic, she relies on insulin injections to manage her blood sugar levels. During her appointment, her doctor expressed concern about her current levels and proposed increasing her insulin dosage.
However, Hajah L wanted to reassure the doctor that she would work to stabilise her sugar levels on her own initiative, without the need for an increased dose.
The doctor, however, was firm and refused her request, renewing her prescription with the additional insulin as recommended.
In my opinion, the doctor could have shown a bit more flexibility and considered Hajah L’s wish to try managing her levels independently.
While the doctor is certainly the expert, a small measure of compassion and understanding can make a difference.
