SILVERSTONE, United Kingdom (AFP) - Lewis Hamilton
made the most of a favourable safety car intervention
yesterday to claim a record sixth British Grand Prix victory
at a packed Silverstone.
The defending five-time world champion clocked the
fastest lap on his final lap to finish 25 seconds clear of
Mercedes team-mate and nearest title rival Valtteri Bottas
after an action-packed contest.
The Briton moved 39 points clear of the Finn behind
in the title race, but Bottas was unlucky with the timing
of the safety car which effectively gave Hamilton a free
pit stop.
Charles Leclerc of Ferrari was third.
Pierre Gasly finished fourth ahead of his Red Bull
teammate Max Verstappen, whose race was compromised
by a late collision when Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari drove
into him, and Carlos Sainz of McLaren.
It was Hamilton’s seventh win in 10 races this year and
the 80
th
win of his career. He had shared the British Grand
Prix record of wins, on five, with fellow Briton Jim Clark
and Frenchman Alain Prost.

PARIS (AFP) - Matthijs de Ligt is
closing in on a move to Juventus
after
Ajax
announced
last
Saturday that the rising star will
skip the Dutch champions’ pre-
season training camp due to his
expected departure.
In a statement, Ajax named a
28-man squad travelling to the
camp in Bramberg in Austria
last Saturday afternoon, adding
that “awaiting a possible transfer,
Matthijs de Ligt is not travelling
with the group”.
Last week, the player’s agent
MinoRaiolatoldDutchnewspaper
De Telegraaf
that a deal had been
struck between Juve and the
powerful centre-back, reportedly
a five-year contract worth EUR12
million (USD13.5 million) a season
with a EUR135 million release
clause.
However, the two clubs had
been locked in negotiations with
Ajax
reportedly
demanding
EUR75 million, but the
Gazzetta
dell Sport
claims that the a fee of
EUR70 million is set to be agreed.
De Ligt, who turns 20 next
month, is expected to join Serie
A champions Juve after wowing
with superb displays during Ajax’s
thrilling charge to the Champions
League semi-finals last season.
He captained the team to
a domestic double as their
fairytale European run - which
included wins over Real Madrid
and Juventus - came to a heart-
breaking end with semi-final
defeat to Tottenham Hotspur
after leading 3-0 on aggregate at
half-time in the second leg.
The signing would be the sixth
of a busy summer for Juventus,
who have brought in Maurizio
Sarri as coach after removing
Massimiliano Allegri and signed
Paris Saint-Germain’s (PSG) want-
away midfielder Adrien Rabiot,
Aaron Ramsey, Luca Pellegrini,
Merih Demiral and 41-year-old
Gianluigi Buffon, who returns to
Turin after a year in the French
capital with PSG.

“What a day,” said Hamilton. “To all the crowd, thank
you so much for coming out.”
Hamilton, who stopped on his slow-down lap to collect
a British ‘Union Jack’ flag, added, “I love you Silverstone. I
appreciate everything and the opportunity to be a part of
this.
“I couldn’t have done this without these guys or without
my team.”
A glum Bottas said: “Congrats to Lewis... It wasn’t my
day.”
A much happier Leclerc said, “It’s probably the race I’ve
enjoyed the most in my career.”
The safety car was deployed when Antonio Giovinazzi
spun into a gravel trap in his Alfa Romeo - gifting Hamilton
a ‘free’ first, and only, pit stop. The luckless Bottas, on a two
stop strategy, had already pitted before the incident.
