20 teams eye top spots

Twenty teams involving 260 players will vie for top honours as the much-anticipated Amitie Cup Badminton Team Tournament 2024 kicked off at the Youth Centre in the capital yesterday.

Brunei National Badminton Association (BNBA) President Mohamad Zuno Kartono bin Haji Ali was the guest of honour at the opening ceremony of the tournament supported by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.

It is open to all citizens and permanent residents, as well as foreign nationals residing in Brunei Darussalam.

Five categories will be contested, namely men’s veteran doubles; advanced men’s doubles; intermediate men’s doubles; men’s doubles 35 and above; and women’s open doubles. The competing categories are divided into four groups with a round robin stage to determine the top two teams before progressing into the quarterfinals and beyond.

The Amitie Cup is an initiative of the Jotech badminton club to develop the sport competitively in the country to create a physically and mentally healthy and fit society. – Fadhil Yunus
