Around 1,670 kilogrammes of material was collected during a recycling drive at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium parking lot on Saturday.

The recycling drive, organised by Green Brunei in collaboration with Kawan Bumi, and supported by the Youth and Sports Department, saw the collection of 1,670.5 kilogrammes of cardboard boxes, plastic bottles, used paper, aluminium and metal for recycling.

According to Green Brunei, the drive collected 1310 kg of paper, 50 kg of plastic bottles, 7.5 kg of aluminium, 290 kg of cardboard and 13 kg of metal. The public also contributed 16 television sets, six monitors, three laptops, four microwaves, five radios, five speakers, four vacuums and 12 printers, said the NGO.

Kawan Bumi will process the materials for recycling in China, Malaysia or Thailand, said Green Brunei.

“The recycling drive was an initiative by Green Brunei to help protect the environment by
segregating waste that can take years to decompose,” said the NGO.

“By doing so, it helps to conserve resources and protect nature as well as reducing waste sent to landfills. The project also supports Sustainable Development Goal 12, which focuses on Responsible Consumption and Production, and aligns with Strategy 7 of the Brunei Darussalam National Climate Change Policy, emphasising the importance of Waste Management.”
