Program Akar Umbi or Grassroots Programme focusses on employment issues and the promotion of better understanding between the public and grassroots leaders in the effort to assist jobseekers in getting employed and upskilled, said Acting Head of the Manpower Planning and Employment Council (MPEC) Secretariat Hajah Noraini binti Haji Mohammad Jamudin.

She also expressed gratitude to Legislative Council (LegCo) members and attendees for working together towards realising Goal 1 of Brunei Vision 2035, which is to ensure that the people of the Sultanate are educated, highly skilled and accomplished.

She said this during the first series of the Grassroots Programme at the Auditorium of the Information Department, Jalan Airport Lama, Berakas yesterday.

The programme, organised by the MPEC Secretariat of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), was attended by Brunei-Muara District Acting Assistant Officer Pengiran Kamal Ariffin bin Pengiran Haji Mohd Yassin as the guest of honour.

LegCo members Yang Berhormat Amran bin Haji Maidin, Yang Berhormat Lawi bin Haji Lamat, Yang Berhormat Zainol bin Mohamed, Yang Berhormat Mohamad Ali bin Tanjong and Yang Berhormat Haji Daud bin Jihan were also present.

“The programme’s objective is to provide a platform to enhance awareness on the establishment of MPEC Secretariat, its functions, roles and initiatives among mukim penghulus and village heads as grassroots leaders,” Hajah Noraini said.

MPEC Secretariat officers also delivered a talk on the MPEC Secretariat, including JobCentre Brunei, in helping the locals to become more employable and marketable.

The programme is set to be held in other districts as a platform to discuss issues and exchange perspectives, suggestions and recommendations with regards to employment.
