Around 100 youth from the Sultanate and South Korea gathered at the ‘2024 Korea-Brunei Future Leaders Exchange Seminar’ at the Radisson Hotel on Friday to foster mutual understanding and exchanges among the young.
The seminar hoped to foster exchange and promote collaboration between South Korean students studying in Brunei and Bruneian youth interested in South Korea as well as to share ideas and visions for future cooperation and strengthen bilateral relations.
The South Korean students participating in the seminar are currently enrolled in universities and graduate programmes in Brunei, including Laksamana College of Business (LCB) and other institutions, while Bruneian students joining the seminar have experience studying in South Korea or planning to study there as well as Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) alumni, along with other Korean enthusiasts.
LCB, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), and other higher educational institutions’ representatives were also in attendance.
Ambassador-Designate of Korea to Brunei Darussalam Sun Nahm Kook, in his welcoming remarks, said, “This year marks the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Brunei and South Korea. To commemorate this milestone, we have organised a series of events that celebrate and strengthen the bonds between both nations.”
In commemoration of the 35th anniversary of the establishment of the Dialogue partner between ASEAN and South Korea, he said, “South Korea and ASEAN upgraded its relations to a comprehensive Strategic Partnership at the 25th Korea ASEAN summit last month. The growing partnership highlights the important role that youth from South Korea and ASEAN member countries will play in shaping the future of our region.”
As South Korea and ASEAN continue to build a closer bond, he believes that events such as the seminar are essential in empowering young leaders to take an active role in this evolving relationship. – James Kon
