Youth feted for contributions to society

A youth organisation and three individuals received recognition for their contributions to society in a ceremony during the National Youth Day celebrations on Wednesday, where they were presented awards by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

The Lamin Warisan Enterprise was awarded for preserving and promoting Brunei Darussalam’s cultural heritage. A representative for the organisation, Nornaqibah binti Abdul Hamid, said the award highlighted the hard work invested in promoting Brunei’s traditions through cultural, environmental, and culinary activities.

“This recognition motivates us to continue expanding our offerings and enhancing the cultural experience for our visitors,” she said.

Meanwhile, Basma Lachkar received an award for his contributions in sports. The 21-year-old wushu practitioner has accumulated a number of accolades, including silver medals at the World University Games and the Asian Games, as well as gold medals at the Asian University Championship and Asian University Games.

She credits her success to the support of her family and coaches, and aims to continue her wushu career while pursuing studies in communication at University Technology Brunei. “My goal is to represent Brunei in international competitions and, if possible, the Olympics,” Basma said.

Md Haziq Hisyam bin Md Zaki received an award for his contributions in community service. He primarily works with the Al Muyassar Group – Nadi Qurannic LC (Belait District) and Persatuan Kemajuan Insan Kesan.

He said the award marks a new beginning and emphasised the importance of continuing efforts to support youth development through initiatives like the Catalyst programme.

“Our focus is on enhancing leadership and self-management among Bruneian youth,” Md Haziq said.

Mohammad Ashmeer Imtiaz Ahmad, a youth volunteer with the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sports, has received an award for the second consecutive year.

Mohammad Ashmeer expressed his appreciation and commitment to service, stating that the recognition is a testament to his dedication and a call to continue encouraging other youths to contribute to national goals.
