Young dancers shine at international competition

A team of 17 young dancers from Elite Dance Coaching at the Peak Club recently made a mark at the International Youth Dance Competition (IYDC) at the National University of Singapore during Singapore National Day.

The team, who trained for over six months while balancing school commitments, won multiple awards: one Top Scorer award, two silver trophies, three bronze trophies, 23 bronze medals, and 30 silver medals.

Six-year-old Aisyah Chen Wen Kui earned a bronze in her solo debut, while 13-year-old Mahdiya Townsend won a Top Scorer award and silver and bronze medals.

Notable performances also came from Suri Aayla binti Md Suhardi, Adella Han Sze Sze, Chin Mei Sze, Azra Amani Majeedah binti Md Amiruddin, Clara Elizabeth Narcis, Sophie Lim Shu Fei, Phuoh Xin Jo and Nur Farhanah Qamarina Zahrah binti Md Fadhillah, who all earned medals in solo, duo, and trio categories.

Meanwhile, in the small group category, the ballet piece Butterfly, featuring Aisyah, Arissa Chen Wen Yu, Azra Amani Majeedah, Mei Sze, Clara Elizabeth, Khloey Tan Wan Xuan, Malai Arissa Balqis binti Sheikh Md Radzi, Nur ’Athiyah Zahra binti Md Faisal, Ong Yi Lyn, Paige Emilia Ward Kaur Sekhon, Phuoh Xin Jo and Sophie Lim Shu Fei, won silver. Another silver was awarded to the lyrical piece Rescue, performed by Azra Amani Majeedah binti Md Amiruddin, Mei Sze, Clara Elizabeth, Nur’ Athiyah Zahra, Xin Jo and Sophie while Stand Tall, performed by Aisyah, Arissa, Khloey, Malai Arissa Balqis, Ong and Paige Emilia Ward Kaur Sekhon earned a bronze.

Dancers Leanne Isabella Steyn, Mahdiya Townsend, Nur Farhanah Qamarina Zahrah binti Md Fadhillah, and Suri Aayla binti Md Suhardi won bronze in the Level 2 group category for Symphony, while Adella Han Sze Sze, Leanne Isabella Steyn, Mahdiya, and Nur Farhanah Qamarina Zahrah also secured a bronze for Nutcracker: Reed Flutes in the Level 3 group category.

“The tournament was Elite Dance Coaching’s second appearance at IYDC Singapore. Their success was guided by head coach Nuradibah Azzzahrah binti Abdullah, with support from class teachers Abby Lim and Chua Mige,” it said in a statement. – James Kon
