Yang Teramat Mulia reaches badminton final

His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Her Royal Highness Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah binti Pengiran Haji Salleh Ab Rahaman attended the Aewon Open Badminton Championship 2021 at the Youth Centre in the capital last night.

Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Muda ‘Abdul Muntaqim and his partner Dessen Chung Min Tin reached the final of the Under-14 Boys’ Doubles category following a 21-11 and 21-9 straight set win over the pairing of Mohd Mirza Afif Syahmi and Mohd Syarifuddin Ermadena.

Also present at the event was Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Anak Muneerah Madhul Bolkiah.

Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Muda ‘Abdul Muntaqim and Dessen Chung will meet the duo of Md Talipuddin Ermadena and Mohd Haziq Rozie in the final tonight.

In the other last four tie, Md Talipuddin Ermadena and Mohd Haziq Rozie following a straight set 21-12 21-15 victory over Muttaqiy and Zarfan.

Besides the Under-14 Boys’ Doubles matches, last night’s sequence of events also included the finals of the Under-14 Boys’ Singles, Women’s Doubles Open and Men’s Doubles Open ‘B’ categories.

In addition to the Under-14 Boys’ Doubles’ final, the remaining final matches in the Mixed Doubles Open, Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles Veteran Open (aged 45 and above) and Men’s Doubles Open ‘A’ categories will also be contested.

The local badminton meet, which was initially held in conjunction with the 75th birthday celebration of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, has been postponed after the country was struck with the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic last August.

Nevertheless, it restarted on July 4 amid the resumption of sports competitions and activities, which took effect early last month.

The eight categories contested are Men’s Doubles Open ‘A’, Men’s Doubles Open ‘B’, Men’s Doubles Veteran Open (aged 45 and above), Mixed Doubles Open, Women’s Doubles Open, Men’s Singles Open, Men’s Under-14 Boys Singles And Under-14 Boys’ Doubles.

The tournament serves as a platform to identify potential players that could be drafted into the national badminton association.

It is organised by the Brunei Darussalam National Badminton Association (BDNBA) with the cooperation of Aewon Brunei and supported by the Youth and Sports Department, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and Brunei-Muara District Office.
