The Pertiwi Association organised a competition to showcase the skills and talents that go into perfecting the household at the Kampong Pandan Community Hall yesterday.
Head of Cluster Six of the Department of Schools Halizawati binti Haji Kepli, the guest of honour, was welcomed by the association’s secretary Halimah binti Abdullah.
The event saw more than 50 participants of all ages participating in more than 50 categories in the competition.
The competition included 10 categories for composition (gubahan), three for sewing and weaving, nine for cooking, 13 for kuih-muih, as well as five categories for flower arrangements.
The entries were assessed by a panel of judges, with points tallied based on the criteria for each profession. The points received in each category were combined to form an overall score, with prizes handed out for each step of the competition.
Halimah delivered a speech on behalf of the association’s chairperson Fatimah binti Tanji, during which she explained that the annual competition is organised in celebration of the 76th birthday of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.
“The competition has always been well-received with many turning up to showcase their skills and talent in various fields such as cooking and weaving,” she said.
She also highlighted how the competition provides opportunities for women to share their homemaking knowledge and skills, and hoped that the competition will inspire women to perfect their skills as a pillar of the household.
The event saw the handing of prizes to top three participants in the competition: Hasmah binti Haji Hamdi in first place, Noryah binti Haji Hussin as first runner-up and Rosfadilah binti Haji Osli in third spot.
