The Magistrate’s Court yesterday sentenced a local man to 18 months’ jail and two strokes of the cane after he pleaded guilty to assaulting his wife and damaging her car.

DPP Nurul Fitri binti Kiprawi revealed that the defendant, Mohammad Sharul Yasmi bin Md Yassin, had first denied the charge of assaulting his wife, and was released on bail. He had then approached her, started a verbal argument and attacked her car.

The defendant has since changed his plea, admitting to the mischief charge.

The court further learnt that the defendant had thrown a fit at their STKRJ Kampong Rimba residence at 9am on August 23, 2020.

Hearing a commotion, the wife headed to the bedroom to discover the defendant, angry, with his mobile phone broken. He demanded for her phone, which she had hidden safely as it was needed for her work.

The defendant started throwing around items in the bedroom, before pushing his wife onto the bed and choking her with his hands. He also punched her arm and kicked her in the thigh.

The wife lodged a police report, leading to his court date for the assault charge.

On July 5, 2021, when the defendant was out on bail after denying the assault charge, he got into a verbal argument with his wife. In a fit, he headed to the garage, grabbed a metal rod and repeatedly hit his wife’s car.

This led to the mischief charge, after the wife lodged a report. The defendant eventually admitted to both charges.
