Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi bin Haji Mohamad said a whole-of-nation approach is needed to tackle the problem of child abuse in its early stage.
During yesterday’s 19th Legislative Council (LegCo) session, LegCo member Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Suyoi bin Haji Osman asked if child abuse cases could be detected and given intervention earlier.
In his reply, the minister said a whole-of-nation approach involving neighbours, community members, grassroots leaders and government agencies is needed.
“Child abuse happens at home, so people closer to the victims and around them would be the first to spot such abuse,” he said, adding that in majority of cases, child abuse cases are found out by teachers, and it is appreciated when early action is taken to overcome the problem.
