When they go high, we go low?

AFP – Hybrid mullet-bob cuts, natural waves, strict bangs or flashy tones – daring hairstyles are currently popular. Yet, the low bun, in a casual chic version, was the favoured choice at the recent Copenhagen Fashion Week.

Guests seemed to swear by the low, deceptively tousled chignon, which they accessorised with both classic and attention-getting hair ties.

It makes for an effortlessly chic look that’s sure to inspire many people this season.

In fact, even Chief Executive Officer of Copenhagen Fashion Week Cecilie Thorsmark, made several appearances in a low bun.

A retro hairstyle that takes us back to the early 1900s, it can be worn with a hat – or a cap, an accessory also spotted all around Copenhagen.

Once you’ve mastered the positioning of the bun, you can let your imagination and creativity run wild.

The fact remains, however, that street styles in the Danish capital favoured the falsely unkempt bun, as if done in a hurry, and therefore by nature casual.

This look can be finished by smoothing down the rest of the hair, sometimes with the help of hairspray, for the chic aspect of the look.

While most of the fashion crowd opted for a centre part for a more classic version, others chose to pull all their hair back, while a handful paid homage to the early 2000s by letting two strands fall over their face. As for the bun, as we’ve seen, the idea is to tie it in a somewhat dishevelled manner.

It’s also possible to opt for a perfectly shaped, more sophisticated version, and even to create a braided version of a bun, but still positioned low which is actually the only essential condition for embracing this trend with style.

Whichever version you choose, a low bun goes with absolutely everything. A long or midi skirt, loose-fitting denim or utility shorts, a suit, a sophisticated or casual dress, or a biker jacket, it doesn’t matter.

    FOCUS ON ACCESSORIES

This is the hairstyle that can be worn with any outfit, day or evening, at a dinner party, a social event or at work. But it’s also possible to elevate it according to your mood, taste and feelings of the moment, with a host of accessories that are also about to make a comeback.

It you want to stick to a classic version, you can’t go wrong by opting for an all-purpose elastic, thin enough to blend into your hair and go totally unnoticed.

But for a 100 per cent Nordic style, look for some flashier accessories. This could be a ribbon, a wide elastic band or – best of all – a scrunchie, preferably in shades that may or may not match your look of the day. It’s also possible to slip barrettes into your hair, for a dual purpose – both aesthetic and practical, since they’ll keep rebellious strands in place.

And for the more daring, why not attach a flower – or butterfly-shaped clip to your hair for a fun touch? Whatever accessory you choose, the low bun will undoubtedly be a hot style this season, allowing you to play the casual chic and mix-and-match card to the fullest, two signature characteristics of Danish fashion.
