I recently stumbled upon a social media site for people facing hardship. I was surprised by how popular the site was, as I was under the impression that there were not that many people below the poverty line.
The more posts I read, the more I realised that most of these individuals were not there for handouts; merely some sort of temporary relief to tide them over until their applications for financial aid from the authorities came through.
We are a wealthy country. But that doesn’t mean that we don’t have families who live paycheque to paycheque. I can imagine how challenging it would be for these people if they lost their jobs.
It got me thinking about what the poverty rate is in our country. How many have fallen through the cracks without anyone noticing? What can we, as a society, do to keep them from prolonged hardship?
