Welcoming new minds at UTB

Nur Batrisyia binti Metussin, one of the new 584 students at the start of Universiti Teknologi Brunei’s (UTB) orientation week at the institution’s multi-purpose hall yesterday, said she was excited to pursue her studies at UTB.

“I chose UTB because it is one of the best technology universities in the Sultanate and I also wanted to stay in the country due to my responsibilities. I decided on data analytics because of its vast potential. The country needs more people in this field. I also enjoyed computing after completing a three-month course at Micronet International College,” she said.

Nur Batrisyia, who enrolled in Bachelor of Science in Computing (major in Data Analytics), hopes to gain more knowledge and contribute to the country’s technological advancements.

Meanwhile, Muhammad Zahirul Aniq bin Supri who enrolled in Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, said, “I was excited when I was accepted. I want to be a pilot as it is my passion. To be a good pilot, I felt that I need to be a good engineer, which is why I chose UTB.”

During the orientation week, students will benefit from various engaging activities.

These include informative briefings by UTB officers, introductions by the Schools and Faculty, and talks by guest speakers covering from career to religious, and awareness topics.

Campus tours will also familiarise the students with the university’s facilities, services, and layout. Prior to the orientation week, co-curricular activities (CCA) booths were set up on campus.

The booths showcased activities, organisations and clubs for new students to join. It allows students to discover their interests and passions and participate in extra-curricular activities.

UTB Vice Chancellor Datin Paduka Professor Dr Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman delivered a welcoming address and congratulated the new intakes as they embarked on their educational pursuits at the university. The new intake of students for the academic year 2023/2024 participated in an oath-taking recitation.

A slideshow was shown, followed by the recitation of Doa Selamat. The orientation week, organised by the Student Affairs Office and Student Representative Council of UTB (MPPUTB), aimed to facilitate the transition into university life for new students.

The programme, from July 17 to 18 and July 20 to 23, offers a diverse range of activities and informative sessions designed to support students during their transition. – James Kon
