The Ministry of Education (MoE) would like to respond to Worried Mum’s letter, ‘Concern over unhygienic toilets at primary schools’, published in the Opinion page on July 6, 2024.

We acknowledge the author’s concerns on the unhygienic state of the toilets in schools and the potential impacts of school environment on the health and well-being of the students. We regret the unfortunate experience of the author’s son and we wish him a full recovery.

In order to maintain the standards of health and hygiene in schools, for the comfort of the students, the MoE places a high priority on the welfare of the school community by making sure that restrooms are kept clean.

It is imperative that all educational institutions closely follow the rules and policies set forth by the ministry’s relevant departments and other governmental and regulatory bodies in order to raise the calibre of the facilities and sanitation of educational settings.

In this regard, the ministry will continue to collaborate closely with schools to maintain these standards and ensure the well-being of all students. The ministry will also enhance ongoing monitoring and supervisory visits to schools and educational institutions.

The MoE thus requests the cooperation of parents and guardians in conveying any concerns regarding the cleanliness of any educational institutions directly to the management of respective schools or educational institutions.
