The Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe) under the Ministry of Development appreciates the concerns and feedback shared via various platforms regarding the management of roadside waste collection sites.
We value your opinions and comments, and will utilise your feedback to take the necessary actions to improve our services.
Our department would like to give insights into the situation detailed in the letter, ‘Dumpsites overflowing with trash’, published in the Opinion page on April 23.
We recently appointed a new contractor to carry out waste collection from roadside collection sites in the Brunei-Muara District. However, the main challenge during the transitional period between the previous and current contractors is the insufficient supply of assets and special vehicles to deal with the amount of waste from the public.
Moreover, the recent lift of COVID-19 restrictions, which coincided with the Syawal celebration had resulted in a massive amount of waste being disposed of by the public.
Nonetheless, the department is committed to monitoring and ensuring that the newly-appointed contractor abides by and complies with the department’s contract through frequent collections to avoid overflow at these waste collection sites and expedite the supply of assets and special vehicles.
We strive to ensure that these waste collection sites are well maintained and properly managed for the comfort of the users.
