The European consumer test organisation, Euro NCAP, for the first time, assessed the safety of heavy-duty trucks, with Volvo’s FM model earning the top rating of five stars. The Volvo FM also recorded the best overall result among all trucks tested.
Euro NCAP awarded the Volvo FM its City Safe award, recognising its exceptional performance in driver support and collision avoidance, particularly in protecting vulnerable road users in urban traffic.
“This outstanding result makes me so proud as it confirms Volvo Trucks’ leading position in safety,” said President of Volvo Trucks Roger Alm.
“Safety is a core value for us and a cornerstone in our heritage. Safety has been guiding us from the very start of our company – and with every new product launch, we are making our trucks even safer.”
Euro NCAP’s five-star rating means that Volvo has shown excellent performance on criteria such as driver support and collision avoidance, delivering traffic safety for the driver and surrounding road users.
Additionally, both Volvo models fulfil the City Safe criteria, thanks to good vision and good performance of Volvo’s active safety systems, designed to protect vulnerable road users in city traffic situations.
“This is proof of our consistent efforts in safety developments to go beyond what is required by legislation, towards our vision of zero accidents involving our trucks,” said Traffic and Product Safety Director at Volvo Trucks Anna Wrige Berling. “Euro NCAP ratings will guide customers in their purchase decisions as well as challenge vehicle manufacturers to continuously work to improve safety.”
Euro NCAP, established in 1996 in Belgium, is the European industry standard for assessing vehicle safety. Supported by European governments and the European Union, it has expanded its scope to include heavy-duty trucks.
The recent truck assessments evaluated safety systems in three areas: safe driving, including occupant monitoring, vision, and speed assistance; collision avoidance, covering incidents such as frontal collisions and low-speed manoeuvres; and post-crash factors, including rescue information. The scores in these areas determined the vehicle’s overall star rating.
Euro NCAP plans to expand its testing scope further, incorporating crash protection and assessments of trucks in different transport segments in the future.
