Virtual talk on historicism

The Language and Literature Bureau (DBP) continued with the International Malay Language, Literature and Culture Congress Series (KABSBM) yesterday.

The 12th presentation in the series featured a speaker from Singapore, Executive Director of the Asia Journalist Association-Singapore Office (AJA-SO) Dr Norman Suratman, chaired by DBP Brunei Head of Literature and Magazine Division Dr Haji Mohd Ali bin Haji Radin.

Themed ‘Historisisme Baru dan Kesedaran Bangsa’, the event looked at how history is used to explain the existence of phenomena, including ideas and beliefs in social and cultural practices.

Dr Suratman explained clashing views between western philosophy and Islamic history, especially in spiritualism and ‘insan-khalik’.

He also touched on the differences between historicism, new historicism, Islamic muhasabah.

The online event attracted 110 participants, including DBP Acting Director Suip bin Haji Abdul Wahab, DBP Acting Deputy Director Hajah Sariani binti Haji Ishak and stakeholders from the Sultanate and abroad.

KABSBM was supported by Universiti Brunei Darussalam, Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali, Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan, Brunei Youth Council, Asterawani and Putra Seni Group.

It is a series of talks from March 16 to June 22, featuring working papers on Mondays and Wednesdays.

The congress will see a total of three keynote papers and 20 accompanying papers being delivered.
