The Community Development Department (JAPEM) issued an official statement that information in an account on the TikTok app called ‘Info Rasmi Bantuan Brunei’ claiming to offer financial assistance of BND500 through the Monthly Welfare Assistance Unit (BKB) for Brunei Darussalam citizens, is false.
The department said it has not issued any statement as stated in the post. The public is urged to exercise caution, avoid being misled and refrain from believing information shared on social media platforms without verifying its authenticity.
Individuals are advised not to share personal details with unverified sources.
JAPEM said it takes the issue of fake account impersonation seriously.
It reminded the public that spreading false or misleading information, especially when it is intentionally fabricated to deceive, is an offence. Such actions are punishable under the Public Order Act, Cap 148, Section 34. This section stipulates that anyone who spreads false reports or makes false statements, whether orally, in writing, or through any other means, that disrupts public order can be sentenced to up to three years in prison, fined up to BND3,000 or both.
