UTB welcomes new intake

New Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) intakes are encouraged to set high personal and academic goals, always crave knowledge, be pro-active and a team player in academic and extra-curricular activities, said Vice-Chancellor Datin Paduka Professor Dr Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman.

She made these remarks during the UTB orientation week for the academic year 2022/2023 intake yesterday for 700 new students.

Datin Paduka Professor Dr Hajah Zohrah also spoke on UTB’s 2019-2023 vision, ‘A Global University Impacting Society’.

“The vision is supported by the university’s mission statement – to nurture socially responsible talents deeply rooted in MIB values, and to commit to building a global and entrepreneurial society in pursuit of innovation, industry-relevant capabilities, towards the fulfilment of Brunei Vision 2035.”

She also said that UTB ranks 340th place in the QS World University Rankings 2023 and is “the only university in the Sultanate rated Five Star by the QS”.

The one-week orientation programme, from yesterday until Saturday, features a host of activities to help students adapt to university life including briefings from UTB staff; introduction to the various schools and faculties; motivational, counselling, religious, and awareness talks; campus tour; and briefing on volunteering programmes.

Booths have also been set up on campus for the orientation week to highlight the array of activities, organisations, and clubs.

The vice-chancellor said, “In UTB, we believe it is crucial to expose students to the community.

“Fifteen community outreach activities will be held during orientation including a beach clean-up, spending time with children in Pusat Ehsan, cleaning campaign, donating items to underprivileged families and activities with senior citizens.”
