UTB-STE Connect brings together world experts

The Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) Science, Technology and Engineering Connect (UTB-STE Connect 2023) commenced yesterday and will continue until tomorrow.

Organised by the university, the event is being held at various locations, including the International Convention Centre (ICC) , The Rizqun International Hotel and UTB.

Themed ‘Research and Applications for a Better World’, the congress comprises five conferences – the 9th Brunei International Conference on Engineering and Technology (BICET 2023), the 6th International Conference on Applied Computational Intelligence in Information Systems (ACIIS 2023), the 2nd International Conference on Business, Management and Information Systems (ICBMIS 2023), the International Conference on Agrotechnology, Beverage, and Food (ICABF 2023), the ATU-NET International Conference on Innovation and the Entrepreneurship in Computing, Engineering and Science Education (InvENT 2023).

The BICET 2023, organised by the Faculty of Engineering (FEng), focused on ‘Engineering and Technologies for a Cleaner and Greener World’. The conference’s first day was held at the ICC. It featured two keynote speakers – Professor Dr Masataka Kubo from the Department of Chemistry for Materials, Faculty of Engineering at Japan’s Mie University and Professor Dr Izharul Haq Farooqi from the Department of Civil Engineering at India’s Aligarh Muslim University.

The ACIIS 2023, a workshop organised by the School of Computing and Informatics (SCI), was held at UTB on the first day as one of three parallel sessions.

Meanwhile, the ICBMIS 2023, organised by UTB School of Business (UTBSB), was held at the ICC.

The conference began with a keynote address by Professor Hun Tong Tan from Nanyang Technological University. The session was moderated by Dean of UTBSB Dr Fadzliwati binti Mohiddin followed by the first session on accounting and finance, chaired by Dr Ulaganathan Subramanian.

Second keynote speaker Dr Iman Harymawan delved into the role of accounting in business resilience to support the achievement of United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) moderated by Dr Stephen James Singaraju. The second session was chaired by Dr

Hajah Farahiyah binti Haji Kawi.
ICABF 2023 organised by the School of Applied Sciences and Mathematics (SASM), was held at the ICC.

It began with a plenary session by Professor Dr Yonathan Asikin from the Faculty of Agriculture, Japan’s University of the Ryukyus, 1 – Sembaru, Nishihara, Okinawa and followed by the first keynote address by Professor Dr Tan Chin-Ping from the Faculty of Food Science and Technology, Universiti Putra Malaysia in Selangor.

Professor Dr Utai Klinkesorn from the Faculty of Agro-Industry, Thailand’s Kasetsart University, Bangkok delivered a keynote address followed by two talks – the first, themed ‘Food Product Innovation and Development’, was chaired by Professor Dr Tan Chin-Ping and the second on ‘Agricultural Engineering and Technology’, chaired by Professor Dr Utai Klinkesorn.

The ATU-NET International Conference on Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Computing, Engineering and Science Education (ATU-NET InVENT), was organised by the Centre for Innovative Engineering (CIE) at UTB in collaboration with the Asia Technological University Network (ATU-NET) and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) at the ICC.

The conference commenced with welcoming remarks from UTB InvENT Chairman Dr Heru Susanto and UiTM InvENT Chairman Professor Ts Dr Haryani binti Haron, followed by an address from ATU-NET Executive Director Associate Professor Dr Mohd Ariffin Abu Hassan.

This was followed by a keynote address by Professor Ir Ts Dr Sivarao Subramonian from the Innovative Design Engineering Faculty of Manufacturing Engineering Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka, moderated by Professor Kamariah Ismail of UTBSB. Two sessions followed and were moderated by Dr Junaid Anjum from UTB, and Associate Professor Ir Dr Amnorzahirah Amir from UiTM.

The second session was moderated by Dr Wendy Pei Ng Qing of UTB and Dr Siti Noor Suzila Maqsood Ul-Haque of UiTM.

This was followed by the second plenary speaker Professor Dr Saad Hajj Bakry of the Computer Engineering, College of Computer and Information Sciences, Saudia Arabia’s King Saud University and proceeded with another two tracks.

The first day of ATU-NET InVENT conference concluded with two workshops. The first was facilitated by Associate Professor Ts Dr Abdul Halim Abdullah and Professor Ir Ts Dr Solehuddin Shuib from UiTM, and the second by Associate Professor Ts Dr Nur Atiqah Sia binti Abdullah from UiTM.

The congress also featured other events including the 11th ATU-NET Board Meeting, the 2nd UTB University Presidents’ Forum and the UTB Women Leadership Forum.  – Azlan Othman
