USMS aims to encourage efficient use of water, electricity

The Unified Smart Metering System (USMS) aims to encourage and drive a more efficient and customer-friendly supply and use of water and electricity utilities. With this, Legislative Council (LegCo) member Yang Berhormat Pengiran Haji Isa bin Pengiran Haji Aliuddin inquired whether steps have been considered to support the less fortunate in living life without interruption to their water and electricity supplies.

Yang Berhormat Pengiran Haji Isa noted that once the credit for water supply is depleted, the credit from the electricity supply will automatically be utilised to prevent any disruptions in the supply.

“While pursuing a more efficient system, it is important not to neglect those who are facing financial challenges and complications,” said the LegCo member.

In response, Minister of Development Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Muhammad Juanda bin Haji Abdul Rashid said the policy accompanying the implementation of the water tariff system via the USMS will not see water being cut off once the user’s credit is exhausted.

Looking at the USMS system, the minister said only the electricity supply will be cut off once the credit runs out, much like the current metering system.

“In recognising that water is a crucial resource for life and is required on a continual basis, this is also an act of kindness and consideration in assisting the underprivileged,” added the minister.
