Urgent need for slope protection to prevent soil erosion, flooding

The Opinion letter on ‘Call to address soil erosion in Kampong Sengkurong ‘A’ published in the Bulletin on February 5 highlights an issue that is far too common across Brunei.

Exposed slopes left untreated after earthworks are a major contributor to erosion, blocked drains, and localised flooding. The situation described in the article is not an isolated case; similar issues can be seen in various developments, including in Kampong Lugu, Kampong Subok, Kampong Rimba, Kampong Jangsak and many others.

According to standard guidelines, all exposed slopes after earthworks must be properly turfed or protected with suitable erosion control measures.

However, poor enforcement has led to multiple instances where developers fail to comply, leaving slopes vulnerable to heavy rain. This not only causes muddy roads and accessibility problems for residents but also clogs drainage systems, exacerbating the risk of flooding in affected areas. The impact extends beyond inconvenience – continuous erosion can destabilise land and damage properties.

Authorities must take urgent action to enforce existing guidelines. Developers and contractors should be held accountable for ensuring that slopes are adequately protected after earthworks.

Implementing proper drainage, retaining walls and slope protection is essential to prevent these recurring issues. Without firm enforcement, the situation will persist, affecting more communities and straining infrastructure meant to manage stormwater. Addressing these concerns now will mitigate long-term environmental and structural damage, ultimately benefiting both residents and public infrastructure.
