Uphold business ethics amid temporary plastic tax suspension, says JPES

The Department of Economic Planning and Statistics (JPES) in the Ministry of Finance and Economy (MoFE) through the Department of Consumer Affairs advised businesses to act ethically and responsibly in response to the temporary remit (suspension) of excise duty rate for plastic’s primary form and other related plastic products announced by MoFE on July 6, 2023.

Businesses are encouraged to explain any price adjustments related to the latest development on the plastic tax in a transparent manner, and to act responsibly by refraining from engaging in unreasonable price increase and stating justifications which are misleading to consumers.

During the monitoring work conducted by JPES, businesses were reminded to adopt fair pricing practices to maintain a healthy business environment and building consumer trust, as well as contribute to the overall success of environmental initiatives.

Consumers are encouraged to use recyclable and eco-friendly products to support a sustainable marketplace and a green economy.

For any concerns on businesses exploiting the situation like excessive price increases related to the recent temporary suspension of the excise duty rate, the public may reach out to JPES through the official channels of PenggunaBijak app and Darussalam Line 123 (TD123), along with details of the complaint and supporting document as evidence.
