University library celebrates upgrade

The Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Library has been upgraded under the ‘Learning Commons’ project, which was planned over five years ago and includes the renovation of the surau and the creation of a seminar room, computer lab and shop space.

Vice-Chancellor of UBD Dr Hazri bin Haji Kifle officiated an open to mark the upgrade.

“We would like to showcase the infrastructure of UBD Library in its role as a social organisation supporting education, both for those just beginning as well as those on a life-long learning journey,” said acting head of librarian Haji Muhammad Yussuf bin Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Dewa Dato Paduka Haji Musa in his welcoming address.

He added, “We want to bring back our community to the library – to the warehouse of knowledge that we should make use of as much as possible.

“We are overwhelmed by the world of information. One of the best ways to filter information that is authentic and accurate is for us to return to studying, by using a library’s resources to research in a more authoritative environment, with reliable references in reading materials, journal, and databases, whether printed or electronic.”

He stressed, “We want to become a society that is knowledgeable, educated only with facts or accurate information.”

Haji Muhammad Yussuf also said, “The whole lower level of the main library is open and can be visited by the public.

“A café and multipurpose store will be located and operate in the area soon. Students’ family members can relax and enjoy a meal while waiting, and have the opportunity to interact and see for themselves real life in a university.”

The public can visit the open day until January 18, where among the featured activities are workshops and health screening.  – James Kon
