UNDP to power Brunei’s future-ready ambitions with deeper strategic ties

As Brunei Darussalam sharpens its focus on building a future-ready economy, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has stepped up to support the Sultanate’s bold vision for inclusive, sustainable growth under Wawasan Brunei 2035.

UN Assistant Secretary-General and UNDP Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, Ms. Kanni Wignaraja, arrived in the capital over the weekend for high-level talks aimed at strengthening UNDP’s partnership with Brunei. Her visit signals renewed momentum to deepen cooperation in areas ranging from youth empowerment and innovation to climate resilience and economic diversification.

During her meeting with Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah, discussions centred on how the UN agency’s technical expertise could enhance Brunei’s ability to navigate global challenges and accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“Action to diversify the economy, climate adaptation strategies, and skills development programmes will ensure inclusive and sustainable national growth,” said the minister. “With UNDP’s assistance, we aim to stay on course to deliver on the Government’s stated objectives, ensuring Brunei remains peaceful and its people continue to enjoy rising standards of well-being.”

UNDP brings decades of global experience in policy design and programme innovation, offering Brunei access to world-class insights to shape future-ready policies and initiatives.

The partnership comes at a time when Brunei is actively investing in education, youth development, and innovation as key pillars of its diversification agenda. With a 99.9 per cent literacy rate, 100 per cent primary school enrolment and a rising life expectancy, the nation has made remarkable strides in human development—ranking second in ASEAN, just behind Singapore.

Yet, challenges remain in reducing long-term reliance on oil and gas, strengthening workforce readiness, and building climate resilience. UNDP’s role will be critical in supporting Brunei to meet these evolving demands.

Ms. Wignaraja reiterated the UNDP’s commitment to walk alongside Brunei on its journey to Wawasan 2035.

“UNDP is committed to collaborating with the Government closely on advancing innovation, action for longer-term economic diversification, and delivering sustainable prosperity for all,” she said. “A deeper partnership will help Brunei foster greater resilience in a dynamic and rapidly changing region.”

Beyond government-level talks, Ms. Wignaraja also engaged with youth leaders and private sector stakeholders to explore emerging priorities and new avenues for strategic collaboration.

Her visit marks a pivotal step forward in aligning Brunei’s national aspirations with global expertise—ensuring that no one is left behind in the country’s push for a thriving, resilient, and inclusive future.
