UPI – The accolade for the inaugural World’s Ugliest Lawn competition went to Kathleen Murray, an Australian woman from Sandford, Tasmania, whose yard fell victim to bandicoot havoc.
Organised by the town of Gotland, Sweden, this contest was initiated two years ago as a local effort to promote water conservation during a severe drought.
This year, the competition expanded globally, drawing unsightly submissions from lawns in the United States, Canada, Britain, Germany, France, and Croatia. Kathleen Murray emerged victorious with her uniquely bandicoot-ravaged landscape.
Murray’s lawn features sparse patches of yellow grass, shrivelled plants and dry divots caused by the local bandicoots.
“The bandicoots love digging – that’s how they find their favourite food. Now my back yard looks like a real-life Hungry Hungry Hippos game. I also have an echidna that helps, and some chooks,” Murray told the media.
Murray was awarded with a “pre-owned” T-shirt bearing the phrase, ‘Proud owner of the World’s Ugliest Lawn’.
