ANN/THE STAR – Cambodia has arrested two Vietnamese nationals for allegedly trafficking illicit drugs, seizing 20 kilogrammes (kg) of narcotics, the country’s Anti-Drug Department (ADP) said in a news release on Friday night.
The two suspects were arrested on the night of December 24 in front of a hotel in the coastal city of Sihanoukville while they smuggled the drugs from a neighbouring country, Laos.
Sixty packs of heroin weighing 20kg were seized in the suspects’ possession during the raid, the ADP said. Under its law, someone found guilty of trafficking more than 80g of illicit drugs could be jailed for life.
According to the ADP, the kingdom reported crackdowns on 7,405 drug-related cases during the first 11 months of 2023, arresting 18,350 people, including 458 foreigners of 16 nationalities.
A total of 2.85 tonnes of illicit drugs were seized during the January-November period this year, the ADP said.
