Unified National Networks (UNN) successfully connected residents in isolated areas of Kampong Bang Taong, Kampong Kukup, Kampong Buau, Kampong Biadong Ulu, Kampong Sukang and Kampong Melilas with fixed fibre broadband and mobile services despite the lack of commercial power.
UNN implemented a hybrid solar power system at base stations to overcome the challenge. Recognising the logistical challenges of maintaining these remote sites, UNN launched the UNNity for Local Community programme, an initiative involving recruiting and training local residents to perform basic maintenance tasks, such as grass cutting, solar panel inspections and ensuring gates and padlocks are secure to prevent unauthorised access.
A signing ceremony took place on Monday at UNN Mumong Exchange between UNN Acting Chief Executive Officer Chris Phan and UNN Senior Vice President Operations Zulyada’in bin Haji Ibrahim Fisal with Rantai anak Jawa and Hazlyn bin Abdullah, recruited to carry out the scope of the programme. – James Kon
